ca. 1850

SSEA

One of two drawings depicting punishments in Indian schools. This one of a class of children seated under a thatched shelter. The class is reading from palm leaves and the master, seated on a mat, is writing on a palm leaf with a stylus. Other palm leaves lie around. Two boys are being punished; one by the 'stooping string' for failing to learn his lesson, the other by 'catching the crane'; being forced to bend forward and balance on his forefinger and right leg.
