Kosugi, Takehisa

Japanese conceptual artist and composer, 1938-2018, active in the United States

An avant-garde composer who was an accomplished violinist but who is known for his interest in found sounds, and in creating events as compositions themselves. He studied music at the Tokyo University of the Arts, graduating in 1962. While still a student he was one of the founders of Group Ongaku, an improvisational music ensemble. He later became identified with Fluxus, and composed for and performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, where he was music director from 1995 to 2012. A retrospective of his work was mounted at the Whitney in 2015.
