Gozzoli, Benozzo
Italian painter and draftsman, ca. 1421-1497
His family came from Sant'Ilario a Colombaia, then a village on the outskirts of Florence (now a suburb of Florence); he was born Benozzo di Lese, probably in 1421. He seems to have trained with Fra Angelico as a painter after he had begun working as an apprentice goldsmith. Benozzo was one of the most prolific and popular fresco painters of his time. While visiting his son and carrying out various commissions, he died in Pistoia in 1497, probably from the plague. Comment on works: religious
