Gibbons, Grinling

English woodcarver and sculptor, 1648-1721

Gibbons is often revered as England's most prominent decorative woodcarver. He was the son of English merchant parents who had settled in Rotterdam. He probably studied drawing and wood and stone carving with Artus Quellinus in Amsterdam. King George I of England was amongst his patrons.
