Algardi, Alessandro
Italian sculptor, draftsman, and architect, 1598-1654
Considered the main rival of Bernini, Algardi was more moderate and classicizing in style and worked more directly in the decorative arts. Important projects include the tomb of Pope Leo XI in St. Peter's (completed 1644) and the free-standing marble group of The Beheading of St. Paul (finished 1644; Bologna, S. Paolo Maggiore). Innocent X Pamphili, who became pope in 1644, was one of Algardi's biggest patrons. Algardi also produced noteworthy designs for silver throughout his career. Comment on works: Sculptor, architect
