Abney, William de Wiveleslie

English photographer and chemist, 1843-1920

Born 24 July 1843; died 2 December 1920. In 1861, Abney was made a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, and captain in 1873. Abney travelled to Egypt in 1874, and in 1876 published a book of photographs entitled 'Thebes and its Five Great Temples.' In 1877, Abney began to teach chemistry and photography at the School of Mining Engineers at Chatham, Kent, England. In 1881, Abney left the army to devote himself to photographic teaching and research.
