Morion of the State Guard of Elector Christian I of Saxony, c. 1580–91. Germany, Nuremberg, 16th century. Russet steel, etched and gilded; overall: 33.3 x 27 x 23.5 cm (13 1/8 x 10 5/8 x 9 1/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance 1916.1516 Christian I of Saxony outfitted his palace guards with black and yellow outfits topped off with a coordinated helmet like this one to highlight his grandeur and refinement. The Saxon coat of arms is also proudly displayed on the crest of this helmet.
