End of Olsons, 1969. Andrew Wyeth (American, 1917–2009). Tempera on panel; unframed: 46.5 x 49.5 cm (18 5/16 x 19 1/2 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Promised Gift of Nancy F. and Joseph P. Keithley 22.2020 © Andrew Wyeth / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York A prominent realist painter during the modern era, Wyeth focused on rural themes throughout his long career. End of Olsons is the final painting he produced at the rustic Maine home of Alvaro and Anna Christina Olson, siblings he befriended for more than 20 years. The brother and sister had died recently, and Wyeth’s composition presents the abandoned house accompanied by a pair of swallows soon to depart for the winter. The Olson house in Cushing, Maine, made famous by Wyeth, is a National Historical Landmark.
