The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 2016.279 © Leonard Freed /Magnum Photos “A wiry jolly grandma dressed in her Sunday best” grabbed Freed’s arm after a church service and suggested he come along to a funeral at a church down the road. “‘It’s a fine funeral, isn’t it’? she said. . . . I asked if she knew the person who died. ‘No,’ she said. It was a young woman who had gone North some years ago, suddenly she became sick and died. Now she had been shipped home to the family. The turnout was good, with people coming from miles around.” —from Black in White America
