Porcelain with enamel pâte-sure-pâte and gilt decoration; overall: 2.5 x 22.8 cm (1 x 9 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Charles Phillips 2010.238 Pate sur pate or 'paste on paste' is a decorative technique for porcelain that involves painting primarily white clay slips on a dark background. After each layer has dried, successive layers are applied before being scraped and carved back to form the decoration in low relief. W. T. Copeland was a British businessman and politician who served as Lord Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament.
