The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Friends of Photography 2008.75 The photographer uses her children, her sisters, and their children to stage scenes that depict “the stress, chaos, darkness, and charm of everyday life.” This image is from her series Domestic Vacations, which was inspired by paintings of boisterous family gatherings by 17th century Dutch and Flemish painters. In her images, which are both fictional and autobiographical, Blackmon strives “to see the mythic amidst the chaos.” Julie Blackmon is the oldest of nine children and the mother of three.
