Woman with a Veil, c. 1891. Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824–1904). Bronze; overall: 60.5 x 32.7 cm (23 13/16 x 12 7/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Thomas L. Fawick Memorial Collection 1979.115 Many of Gérôme’s best known works reflect the 19th-century European fascination with the Middle East, Asia, and North Africa, which manifested in Orientalist works like this sculpture depicting a woman adjusting her veil. Multiple versions of this sculpture exist, including some with marble and gold additions.
