Folio 22, from a Yoga-shastra of Hemachandra: Jain Monk with Disciple and Two Laymen, Two Nuns, and a Laywoman (recto); Text (verso), c. 1275. Western India, Gujarat, 13th century. Gum tempera and ink on palm leaf; overall: 7.5 x 31.1 cm (2 15/16 x 12 1/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1971.129 This painting, from later in a Sanskrit text on yoga and meditation, shows the transmission of the teaching. The senior monk on a throne, who may also be the text’s author, faces a disciple with a sacred book on a stand under a canopy between them. Below is a pious assembly of lay followers and nuns.
