Sugar Basin, c. 1750. Sceaux Factory (French, active 1748–66). Faience; overall: 13.7 x 17.2 x 14 cm (5 3/8 x 6 3/4 x 5 1/2 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Norweb Collection 1961.4 In medieval Italian churches, painted altarpieces served as a focal point for worshippers during the rituals of faith. The figures of Jesus, Mary, and eight saints are framed by a golden background that would have glistened in the flickering candlelight of the church.
