Duvor (Doves), c. 1945. Lisbet Jobs (Swedish, 1909–1961), Jobs Handtryck (Swedish, est. 1944). Handprinted plain weave linen; overall: 90.2 x 73.7 cm (35 1/2 x 29 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Harold T. Clark Educational Extension Fund 1956.415 This mid-1900s design harkens back to royal Swedish taste around 1800. The subdued pastel color palette is distinctly Gustavian, referring to the reigns of two Swedish kings named Gustav in the late 1700s. The flower vase is evocative of ceramics produced by the Gustavsberg Porcelain Company in the 1800s and popular among Sweden’s aristocracy. The vase motif within this design refers to Jobs’s initial training as a ceramicist.
