Panel with a Pattern of Trees and Unidentified Animals, 19th century. Spain, 19th century. Needle lace, filet/lacis (knotted ground and darned in two directions); bleached linen (est.); overall: 92.7 x 69.6 cm (36 1/2 x 27 3/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Anonymous gift in memory of Mrs. Henry G. Keller 1956.323 The darning, or area of woven pattern, on these two attached panels is much thicker than the ground. In the center, a tree is flanked by four-legged animals, perhaps horses, lions, or griffins. The word lace derives from the Latin laqueus, meaning noose.
