Greek and Roman Art

Athlete or Apollo, probably 100–1 BC. Greece, Macedonia (?), probably 1st Century BC. Bronze with silver inlays; overall: 30.8 x 9 cm (12 1/8 x 3 9/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1927.170 This bronze statuette depicts a nude male, perhaps a young athlete or the youthful god Apollo. Lost to time are objects he would have held in his hands, perhaps a bow and arrow. The weight-shift stance of the youth recalls the style of Praxiteles, master sculptor of the 4th century BC.
