The Boar Hunt

Hans Wertinger was among a group of northern European Renaissance artists who painted landscapes for the backdrops of religious and secular compositions. These painters developed a common interest in the landscape of the Danube River Valley, in present-day Germany, as a genre in its own right, and peopled their landscapes with biblical and contemporary figures.

Here, Wertinger depicts a contemporary boar hunt. The mounted hunter on the right wears a plumed hat and a doublet with slashed sleeves, the height of fashion in northern princely courts at the time.
