The small size, skillfully molded faience, and whimsical nature of this statuette all correspond to the Middle Kingdom animal sculptures displayed in this case. The incised eyebrows and ribs and the very thin layer of glaze, however, have few parallels from the Middle Kingdom. The object may therefore date to the Twenty-sixth Dynasty, a time when craftsmen evoked earlier art.
