Dong Kingman
American 1911-2000
American Art
The lively animation of Dong Kingman’s watercolors derives in part from his training in classical Chinese painting and calligraphy. Kingman was born in Oakland, California, to Chinese immigrants but was raised in Hong Kong, where he studied Asian and Western painting techniques. Returning to the United States during the Depression, he worked with a Works Progress Administration art program and gained wider exposure for his art, which tended to be scenic in subject.
