In this northern Baroque landscape, a large tree and a green forest floor lead the eye to a glowing city, mountains, and sky. The image is a “world landscape,” a new type of painting, introduced in Renaissance Antwerp, that depicted a panoramic bird’s-eye view.

David Vinckboons studied with his father in Antwerp but established his career in Amsterdam. There, he introduced Flemish painting traditions to the newly formed Dutch Republic.
