In contrast to early Buddhist art, which consisted mainly of relief sculpture, the art of the Kushan period (first to third century A.D.) saw the development of fully three-dimensional images of Buddhist deities. This fragment represents a bodhisattva, a divine being dedicated to helping other achieve freedom from suffering.
